Sue Feder, outstanding fan of historical mysteries, in 1999

In the spring of 1998, Feder founded a more general organization: The Historical Mystery Appreciation Society. Its magazine, offering news and reviews of historical mysteries, was Murder, Past Tense. The society presented the Herodotus Awards, honoring the best in historical mysteries, at Bouchercon. The magazine and the awards were suspended in 2002 when Feder’s illness forced her to take “a long sabbatical.” She died in 2005. The Sue Feder Historical Mystery Award is now voted on each year by the readers of Mystery Readers Journal and presented at Bouchercon.

With the exception of Malice Domestic, there were no new conventions during the 1980s and only a few organizations holding meetings. However, the future decades would see a great increase in the number of mystery conventions.
